Aussie Day vs NYC Emergency Weather

Last Thursday morning NYC declared it's "snowiest January on record, with 32.3 inches in Central Park compared to the previous record of 27.4 inches in 1925." For most of those who stayed indoor, you were probably very grateful. But, for those of you who braved the storm and went out for Australian Day or to a dinner/drinks you saw just how intense the storm was. Though the 2" of new snow every hour was quite frustrating to be mobile in, it also was one of the most beautiful nights I've seen in NY. People were diving off cars leaving snow angels in the snow, cars were spinning full 180's, and 2am snow ball fights were lining the bars. We happened to run into the only limo driver in town brave enough to drive Manhattan, who escorted us bar to bar. Though it took us 25 minutes to get from West. Village to Bowery, it was worth every fishtailed turn, every stuck vehicle along the way, and every $20 bill given to the driver. Only in NY. Cheers to my aussie girls Staci Child, Sherri Mathieson, Sarah Monteith and Kat, for the Australian motivation. My first Aussie Day has been Sharpie'd in the books!

We managed to get some photos + start a little photo booth at Bowery Electric with the complimentary roses.

Crystal Renn critics

First I would like to say that, in my eyes, Crystal Renn is in great shape! Following the time I spent shooting her for the Fashion For Passion exhibition, people have asked me what she was like, and I've told them that Crystal Renn is not only incredibly energetic, pleasant, and fun to work with - but she is one of the best body movers I've ever shot. Crystal is a true professional and knows how to work her angles superbly well, which is exactly what I told Glamour Magazine in my recent interview with them.

Below are 6 untouched images of Crystal moving around, shifting hips, working chin angles, etc.

It's important to note that, if you watch her thigh, closest to the left side of the screen, as it shifts from a vertical position to a downward - there is a drastic change in body size. This is one of the most basic lessons, when studying either photography or film: lower angles give you a wider subject and the closest thing to the lens will look the largest. As I said in a previous interview, this series that I shot with Crystal was done from a higher angle and with a wider lens. The following is footage taken from the shoot, itself, to better illustrate these points.

I want to reiterate that I feel Crystal looks amazing in both images and the minimal retouching that I did do - it's nothing you wouldn't see in any magazine today. There is nothing hidden about this.

I was fortunate enough to have spent 4th July weekend out at the Timperio's lake house, with handfuls of great friends, again. This was an extraordinary weekend, full of camping, bbq's, fires, friends, naked babies, card games, fireworks, swimming, floaties, canoes, intoxication, and most importantly a big group of lovely humans. Our love goes out to Carlos, who we threw a memorial for, the evening of the 4th. May he dance his heart out with best, upstairs. R.I.P. I told our models it's not that difficult to give a good clean hop throughout the frame, while maintaining subtle expression. I mean come on girls, this was one of four frames we took. Message to the artists!

One of my biggest pet peeves in clicking on a website, opening up a magazine, or looking at a window display, and seeing that one artist has ripped off another artist. Enough already! Get original. Find yourself. I get that we find inspiration in other peoples work, but there's a difference between being inspired and straight ripping someone off. It's pointless to point fingers and throw names around, bc you know who you are, or should. Keep it real. Be inspired, don't steal. It's tacky, and disrespectful.

I rarely get upset, but it heavily disappoints me to see great artists working so hard, just to be ripped off and looked over.

Last month we flew out to Venice Beach to shoot a spread for INKED Magazine. I found our model Nils (Ford Models), through a good friend. It took a minute to find the right boy, the right style, and the right tattoo's, but we found him! We ended up pushing the whole shoot, due to "weather"... I mean, does it ever really rain in LA? This season, I am covering outings photos for Vogue Nippon and TheFashionSpot.com . NY Fashion Week is one of my favorite weeks of the year! Though it is always a blast and you never know what kind of trouble you're going to get into, it is so incredibly exhausting. But, the hell with it, these boots are made for walkin! ;)

Yaya for Women

Last week, we cast Yaya from Women Management. She came by MILK, while we were shooting an editorial and we popped a few frames on her... SMO-KIN HOT! This girl reeks of sex, strong, great body, and a total mover. I love her. She recently cut her hair, it's quite fitting. Yaya is one to watch!

We spun out 2009 with a bang! The evening was spent with some close friends, at our friends award winning bar, Apotheke. Massive bottles of Veuve Clicquot, top notch muddled drinks, non stop dance dance, make out corners, and good company!... Couldn't have been more fun. Cheers, to a new year everyone.

Sunday we had our first real snow day of the season! I had to take full advantage and go to our oh so beautiful, Central Park! Apparently I wasn't the only clever one on the island ;) I haven't seen this many smiles since Toys"R"Us first opened!

New Nicholas Routzen- website, logos, books, rebrand!

I am excited to announce that the new site, portfolios, rebrand, etc are complete and live. Over the last 3+ months, I've worked closely with three of my favorite designers, Virgilio Santos, Brandon Savoy, and Greg Gunn, to execute the new Nicholas Routzen. The rebrand started with designing logos with Greg, which, took many turns in the process. To find that perfect font and perfect feel, it takes some time and many double takes at all of your options! I am a font snob, so, you can imagine the amount of back and fourth of choices. After nailing that, we were able to take it a step further and piece together the new look with a new site layout and entire face lift. Virgilio art directed the entire project, and thanks to his visions, was I able to follow the path, in which we've been wanting to try for the last few years. After the site design and mock up, we were able to start interacting with Brandon, on the new site layout. Brandon created the whole brain and back end of the site. He nailed what we were going for... full screen, large imagery, smooth, crisp, classic.

Staci Child's Bday

Our beloved Staci Child, hair stylist, had her bday party on Wednesday... A perfect start to a great Thanksgiving week/end. The night started out at her 2000 sq ft loft in LES, where her over sized trunk of wigs came out. The party spilled into 200 Orchard, where Reverend Billy Keith heated up the dance floor, with beats. A sweaty dance floor, babes making out, bottomless drinks, and multiple high fives were to be found the rest of the evening. I made sure to snap a million and one of Staci, so she would be reminded of the great time she had, all evening. Happy Bday sucka.

Recently I've been getting a lot of phone calls and emails about the new Elle issue... Pamela Love took a liking to my arm, for obvious reasons, I guess. ;) I was finally able to see the issue in print, while in St. Croix this week. One of the camera crew comes of to me and asks, "Do I know you?... I've seen your tattoo somewhere! Wait your in the new Elle issue!" As she pulls out the mag. Classic.

Let's just say, over the top fun, energetic, playful, and different. This was one of my fav shows in a while just for the sole fact that it was different and quite cheeky. I popped a few black and whites at the very end of the show, I was too intrigued by all the dancing, face making, and jumping around, otherwise I would have taken more photos ;)

One ambien, 3 whiskeys, a tray of wasted airplane food, a bag of gummy bears, and about 6 hours of sleep later, I've arrived in Paris. I will say, I was a bit cross eyed when waking to a stewardess, "bonjour, we've arrived." Haha. Below is the new digs for the month. Love me some sunny windows and an pretty view of a garden and a Russian orthodox. After settling for a bit, I popped a few frames and then laid on the bed for a bit, only to hear an amazing opera singer in the church across the garden. Life Is Good.

Dan Choi - Don't Hide

I recently shot a portrait of Dan Choi, for Orange Coast Magazine. If you haven't heard about Dan, he is a 28th yr old gay US soldier. Upon being discharged from the military,for being gay, Dan wrote the president himself. Dan's fight against the "don't ask, don't tell" is now becoming a world wide inspiration. He is a really sweet guy and definitely had a lot of great insight and stories about his whole situation, with the military. Get em Dan!

The amazing Kata! I shot this editorial for L'Edito Magazine, while in Paris. This was shot in the middle of the rain, in the middle of a hundreds of obnoxiously interested tourists, and in gorilla conditions... Needless to say, very interesting. Kata is super easy going, young, eager, and someone you want to carry around in your pocket, she was that cute. This babe has a great editorial book. Enjoy.
